Community members congratulate Paul Yep promoted to Commander

(SAN FRANCISCO) Eight community groups co-hosted a celebration party in Chinatown last week in honoring Paul Yep who was recently promoted to the rank of Commander, one of the only two Asian and Chinese Americans on the 15-member Command Staff in San Francisco Police Department.
Yep was born in the Chinese Hospital and grew up at the Ping Yuen Public Housing in Chinatown. He joined SFPD in 1994 and was promoted to be a Commander in November. While Deputy Chief Greg Yee is retiring, Yep and Commander Daryl Fong become the only two Asian and Chinese Americans among the top management team in SFPD.

The Asian population in the city has grown to 36-38%. Asian officers have long been underrepresented at all ranks in the Police Department. The Chinese community has continuously called for more promotions within the Police Department to reflect the demographics of the city and meet the needs for police service from the community.
Eight organizations which co-hosted the celebration in Far East Cafe on December 10 included API Council, Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Chinatown Community Development Center, Community Youth Center, Self Help for the Elderly, SF Asian Peace Officers Association, SFPD API Forum and SF SAFE.
