(SAN FRANCISCO) A 78-year-old Chinese woman motorist, who crashed her white Mercedes SUV into a bus stop at the busy West Portal public transit hub killing three people last Saturday, was arrested and booked into jail on vehicular manslaughter and other charges.
The San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) identified the driver of the vehicle was 78-year-old Mary Fong Lau who was booked on three counts of vehicular manslaughter, two reckless driving offenses, driving on the wrong side of the road and driving at an unsafe speed.
Jail record shows that Lau has been in custody with no bail information listed waiting for formal criminal charges filed by the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.
The fatal vehicle collision occurred at 12:15 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, at the intersection of Ulloa Street and Lenox Way which is also the West Portal transit center with multiple bus stops.
It was a solo vehicle collision involving pedestrians, according to SFPD. Lau was traveling eastbound on Ulloa Street when she crashed into a bus stop located at the intersection of Ulloa Street and Lenox Way.
When police officers arrived on scene and located multiple victims suffering from injuries. Despite life-saving efforts made by police officers and firefighters, two male victims were declared deceased at the scene. Three patients were transported to the hospital with injuries.
The third victim, an adult female, died at the hospital and an infant is still suffering from life-threatening injuries.
"The SFPD Traffic Collision Investigations Unit developed probable cause to book the driver, Lau, for 3 counts of felony vehicular manslaughter, felony reckless driving causing bodily injury, and additional traffic violations," SFPD said.
"This incident was a heartbreaking tragedy. The San Francisco Police Department offers its deepest condolences to the victims, their families and loved ones, and everyone at the scene who witnessed and assisted first responders," SFPD added.
All three victims who died in the collision and the critically-injured infant were from the same family. They were identified as Diego Cardoso de Oliveira, 40, father, and his 1-year-old son, Joaquin Ramos Pinto de Oliveira. Both died at the scene of the crash. Third victim was Matilde Moncada Ramos Pinto, 38, mother, who died later in the hospital. Their 2-month-old baby boy has been hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
The Brazilian consulate told the news media that the father of two boys was a Brazilian national who worked for Apple.
Friends said the family of four members were waiting for a muni bus to go to San Francisco zoo on a sunny Saturday at noon.
Information shows that Lau, the driver of the white Mercedes, lives in the nearby neighborhood close to the crime scene.
SFPD said it is an open and active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the SFPD at 1-415-575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411 and begin the message with SFPD.
