A man critically injured in a broad daylight shooting at Portola commercial corridor

(SAN FRANCISCO) A 25-year-old African American man was critically injured in a broad daylight shooting occurring last Saturday, July 30, on San Bruno Avenue in Portola neighborhood. Captain David Moran of Bayview Police Station assured the Chinese community that a Chinese speaking police officer has been assigned to the area for foot patrol.
The shooting occurred at 4:13PM on a Saturday afternoon on the 2600 block of San Bruno Avenue, the busy commercial corridor in Portola neighborhood with popular Chinese owned stores including Imperial Garden Restaurant and Fancy Wheat Field Bakery.
According to the Police Department, the victim was shot multiple times and transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
A number of Chinese merchants who were nearby the crime scene heard the gunshots several times. "I walked out of my store and checked. I saw a gun in the middle of the road and blood outside Round Table Pizza. The window of the pizza shop was broken as well. But I didn't see any victims or suspects around the scene," said a merchant who did not want to be identified.
The Chinese merchants are worried about the crime situation and public safety in the neighborhood since the pandemic. They have not seen the Chinese speaking police officers patrolling the area as often as pre-pandemic. More unhoused individuals are staying all day on the same block of San Bruno Avenue where the shooting occurred, especially this year.
"The young people would throw things into my store to harass us," the merchant said the harassment might be anti-Asian hate related.

Captain Moran responded that the most recent shooting that took place on San Bruno Ave is currently under investigation by the Police Department's Community Violence Response Team.
"The suspect directly involved was taken into custody on August 4 in Fairfield , California," Moran provided an update on the investigation.
"It appears to be an isolated incident for that location. Currently, we have a foot beat assigned to the San Bruno Ave corridor 7 days a week. They work from 8am to 6pm, or 11am to 9pm. One of the officers is fluent in Chinese. His partner was also fluent, but had recently transferred to Central Police Station," said Moran. "In addition, we have a sector car assigned to that area around the clock, and we often receive additional support from outside units in the form of motorcycle and bike officers."
"I personally walk that beat from time to time and have the owner of the San Bruno Supermarket on my community police advisory board. I have regular contact with him to discuss the latest news or incidents along the corridor," said Moran.
With respect to the homeless issue on San Bruno Avenue, Moran said he would pass the information on directly to the foot beat officers who would attempt to get them services to help them get off the streets.
