Leanna Louie kicks off her run for D4 Supervisor with support from active community members

(SAN FRANCISCO) Leanna Louie, candidate for District 4 (Sunset District) Supervisor in November, told her supporters in her launch party last Sunday that she was also a victim of home invasion in which her jewelry from her grandparents, parents and relatives were all taken away by the perpetrators at her San Francisco home.
Louie, who has announced her run for D4 Supervisor, has been an activist since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. She founded United Peace Collaborative in March 2020 to organize volunteers patrolling Chinatown to respond to the rising violence against Chinese Americans in San Francisco.
In addition to the advocacy for victims' rights in the midst of the anti-Asian hate and violence sentiment, Louie was also actively involved in both the recall movements, the recall of three school board members and District Attorney Chesa Boudin.
Louie filed papers to run for D4 Supervisor on June 10 at the Department of Elections and hosted her launch party, which was also her first fundraiser, at Sunset Recreation Center on June 19.
Active Chinese community members were present at the party to show their support for Louie, including Julie Soo, San Francisco Sheriff's Department Oversight Board Member, Ellen Lee Zhao, former mayoral candidate, Selena Chu and Laurance Lee, activists of the recall the school board movement, Dennis Wu, member of the Committee of 100.
Louie is fluent in both English and Chinese languages. She is a first generation immigrant and was born in Toisan of Guangzhou Province in China. She immigrated to San Francisco at the age of 7. She is a veteran and joined the U.S. Army for 11 years.
"I always missed San Francisco when I left home. San Francisco is my home," said Louie at the launch party. When she retired from the Army and came back to San Francisco, Louie found that San Francisco was not in good shape where homelessness, drug addicts and car break-ins were all around the corners. Asian Americans were assaulted on the streets and their homes were invaded.
"My home was invaded and all the jewelry passed down to me by my grandparents, parents, aunties and uncles were all taken away. It is true that my parents’ home was invaded too. Crime has been so bad in San Francisco during the past couple of years. We need some serious change in City government," Louie stated.
Among the supporters in the launch party, Monthanus Ratanapakdee, daughter of 84-year-old Vicha Ratanapakdee who was killed in January 2021 on a driveway outside his San Francisco home, spoke and endorsed Louie on the candidacy. "This woman supports us from her heart. We are Asian Americans. We need to come together."
Louie also received endorsements from activists of the recall school board movement. "People would say that they don't have time. But Leanna always has time for us. We need to unite. She is the voice of Sunset, " Selena Chu said. "We are stronger when we are together. If we want to make changes, we all do it together," Laurance Lee said.
