Lowell wins the champion in 2nd annual inter-league high school lion dance competition


(SAN FRANCISCO) Lowell High School Lion Dance Team won the champion of the second annual Inter-league high school lion dance competition which took place in San Francisco Chinatown on May 13.
The inter-league high school lion dance competition was first held in May 2022 in celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
This year marked the second year for Norman Lau, founder of Lion Dance Me, to host the competition among the high school students in San Francisco to promote Chinese lion dance culture and celebrate Asian Heritage Month in May.
The competition took place on May 13. Five teams participated in the competition, including Lowell, Lincoln, Balboa, Galileo and Washington High Schools. The 2-hour competition was videotaped and posted online for visitors to vote for their favorite teams.
Lion Dance Me, the organizer of the competition, released the victory of the Lowell High School team after one-week voting period ended on May 21.
According to the Lion Dance Me, a total of 5736 votes were received, Lowell got the most votes and won the championship for 2023.

While promoting the lion dance culture among the high school students, Lau also took this opportunity to support Chinatown business where he grew up.
The prize for the winning team last year was thousands of BBQ pork buns for all students and faculty in their school. Boba milk tea was this year's winning prize for the entire members of the Lowell High School.
2,000 cups of boba milk tea were delivered to Lowell High School on May 25. Every student and faculty received a cup of the boba milk tea from 9 shops in San Francisco Chinatown. They were excited to line up on campus after school to share the pride of the lion dance championship.
Lau, a lion dance master and instructor of his lion dance team Lion Dance Me, thanked all the support from the students and the community organizations with donations.
Nine Chinatown boba tea shops provided discounts to offer the popular drinks to Lowell High School students. The Chinatown businesses are also interested in supporting the young generation and promoting the Chinese drink culture.
