(SAN FRANCISCO) The Department of Elections certified a petition on November 9 that seeks the recall of District Attorney Chesa Boudin and announced the recall election to be held on June 7, 2022.

Mary Jung, a Chinese American Democratic Party leader and organizer of the recall Boudin campaign, and Andrea Shorter, the recall campaign spokesperson, released a statement and wrote, “We have tremendous momentum on our side that is growing daily in every corner of San Francisco. Our opponents like to characterize our diverse campaign as an out-of-town, Republican-led effort. It is time to put that tired talking point to bed. The fact is we have support from hundreds of volunteers from across San Francisco and the vast majority of our more than 600 donors are Democrats, decline to state, and no party preference voters.”

They continued, “Now that the recall is on the ballot, we are laser-focused on getting our message out via doors, phones, and airwaves to help ensure San Francisco has a DA that makes public safety their number one priority.”

Boudin was elected in 2019 and sworn into office in January 2020. The first petition which was organized by the city's Republican leaders to recall Boudin failed by short of the required 51,325 signatures. This is the second petition and submitted over 83,000 signatures on October 22 aiming to put the recall on the ballot to remove Boudin from the office.

Within three weeks, the Department of Elections certified the second petition and announced the recall election to be consolidated with the June 7 election next year which is a statewide primary election.

Friends Of Chesa Boudin Opposing the Recall campaign also issued a statement in response to the announcement of the recall election. “After spending $1.4 million, and using shady and misleading tactics, it's no surprise that this radical recall has bought its way onto the ballot. We saw the exact same thing happen with Governor Newsom's recall. We are confident San Francisco voters will reject this Republican-funded and endorsed effort as well," said Julie Edwards, the campaign spokesperson.

"The recall is an attempt to reverse the reforms DA Boudin has enacted to keep us safe and make the criminal justice system fairer. But this will not stop him from continuing to work for all San Franciscans," said Edwards in the statement.
