Kevin Mullin wins in Congress race to succeed the House seat left by retiring Jackie Speier

(SAN FRANCISCO) Kevin Mullin, State Assemblymember (D-South San Francisco), won the congressional race in the November 8 election to succeed the House seat in January next year left by retiring Congresswoman Jackie Speier.
Mullin is the first newly-elected congressional member representing both San Francisco and San Mateo Counties in 15 years. "I am humbled and excited to share that I am projected to win a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, from CA’s 15th District. I am grateful for the voters of San Mateo County and San Francisco who have entrusted me with this privilege, and honored to succeed Congresswoman Jackie Speier," said Mullin.
Under the new redistricting map in effect in January 2022, Mullin was elected on November 8 to represent the California 15th congressional district which covers the most areas in the Northern San Mateo County and Southeast side of San Francisco County, including the Asian neighborhoods, Portola, Bayview, Visitacion Valley, Oceanview and Excelsior.
In the morning of the election day on November 8, Mullin and Assemblymember Phil Ting (D-San Francisco) walked the merchants on the San Bruno Avenue corridor to speak to the community.
Mullin was able to declare victory after the election results were first released on election night. Mullin received 56.48% of the votes in San Mateo County and 52.4% of the votes in San Francisco County.
San Mateo County Supervisor David Canepa who ran for the same seat with Mullin lost in the race and issued a statement to concede.
"Running for Congress has been the most exciting year of my life and I’m so proud of my team. We fought hard and we never gave up. Congratulations to Kevin Mullin, we wish him the very best of luck and look forward to working with him on the most pressing issues our nation faces," Canepa said.
Mullin's late father, Gene Mullin, was elected as South San Francisco Mayor and State Assemblymember representing the same district that Mullin currently holds in the state legislature.
Mullin was born and raised in South San Francisco. He followed his father's footsteps and was elected to South San Francisco City Council first for five years and then the Assembly in 2012. He has served as the speaker pro tem since 2014.
