New promotions at SFPD on July 1: Assistant Chief David Lazar, Commander Julian Ng

(SAN FRANCISCO) Six promotions at the Command Staff level of San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) were named internally recently by Police Chief William Scott. Among the promotions, Deputy Chief David Lazar will be promoted to Assistant Chief and Central Station Captain Julian Ng will be promoted to Commander. They will take over their new positions on July 1.
The promotion news has been around Chinatown for days. The Chinese community is very excited and pleased to hear the promotions both for Lazar and Ng who have been working very closely with the Chinese community for years.
In addition to Lazar and Ng, Airport Bureau Commander Denise Flaherty will be promoted to Deputy Chief, Investigation Bureau Commander Raj Vaswani will be promoted to Deputy Chief, Park Police Station Captain Christopher Pedrini and Taraval Station Captain Eric Vintero will both be promoted to Commander.
BeChinatown and Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association (CCBA) hosted a joint banquet in February to celebrate the promotions of four highest ranking Chinese American Police Officers in SFPD, Commanders Daryl Fong and Paul Yep, Central Station Captain Julian Ng and Ingleside Station Captain Derrick Lew.

Lily Lo, President of BeChinatown, highly recognized the performance and contribution of Ng to the community since he was promoted to lead the Central Station in February 2021. "We all have seen the great work of Captain Ng to make all of us feel safer. His service has greatly benefited our community. We congratulate the upcoming promotions for both Deputy Lazar and Captain Ng," said Lo.
Lo continued, "We are hoping that Chief Scott will assign a Chinese American Police Captain to head the Central Station soon. Chinatown is a very unique and culturally enriched neighborhood. It will be more effective to stop the crime if we will have a new captain who understands our culture and language like Captain Ng."
Police Commissioner Larry Yee, who has been reappointed by Mayor London Breed lately, congratulated Lazar as well as Ng and commented, "Congratulations to David Lazar on his promotion to Assistant Chief. He has been active with the communities and listens to our needs. Whether it is in Chinatown, Fisherman Wharf, Bayview, Sunset or the Tenderloin, he puts his heart out and truly cares for our city, communities and residents safety. He is a beacon of hope and looking forward to working with him in making San Francisco safer for all."
"I also congratulate Julian Ng for the promotion. He has worked tirelessly even when he is off duty. Julian has done a fantastic job in Central Station to keep us safe. He listens and addresses our concerns whether there were anti-Asian hate crimes, robberies or car break-ins in and by having foot patrols in Chinatown, undercover details in North Beach/Fisherman's Wharf and works along with SFPD Community Ambassadors as their eyes and ears," said Yee who also thanked Chief Scott for his selections of the new Police Command Staff.
