Southeast Community Center opens with 2 acres of outdoor gardens and multiple social services


(SAN FRANCISCO) Southeast Community Center in the Bayview neighborhood was officially opened last Saturday to offer the local residents a state-of-art facility and two acres of outdoor space for recreation and activities.
The new center located at 1550 Evans Avenue was designed and built to replace the Southeast Community Facility at 1800 Oakdale Avenue. It was constructed in partnership with the Bayview-Hunters Point community to mitigate the environmental and social impacts of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) Southeast Treatment Plant's expansion in the 1970s and 1980s.
The center, a 45,000-square-foot LEED Gold Certified facility, includes Wu Yee Childcare Center, a café, free wi-fi, public workspaces, and artworks from local artists.

The campus offers two acres of open space, with an amphitheater, gardens, outdoor dining areas, and play spaces for children. The center is powered by rooftop solar panels and operates with 100% greenhouse gas-free hydroelectricity sourced from the SFPUC’s Hetch Hetchy Regional Power System.
Hundreds of Bayview community members and civic leaders joined the grand opening ceremony on October 22 with a block party, tours, musical performances, children activities and free food.

“I am happy to see our City continuing to invest in and offer thoughtful spaces, especially after a pandemic that kept many of us apart and indoors,” said Mayor Breed who joined other elected officials and community leaders in the ribbon cutting ceremony.
Marlene Tran, Southeast Facility Community Commissioner and Visitacion Valley community leader, attended the opening ceremony and encouraged the Asian community members in District 10, which covers Bayview, Hunter Point and Visitacion Valley neighborhoods, to come to enjoy the great service at the brand new community center.
