Late Tenderloin leader Connie Moy honored at State Capitol

(SAN FRANCISCO)Assemblymember Matt Haney (D-San Francisco) presented an In Memoriam resolution at State Capitol on February 12 to commemorate Chinese American Tenderloin leader Connie Moy who passed away on November 17, 2023 at the age of 93.
Moy was born in China and grew up in Hong Kong. She immigrated to the United States at age 17 through marriage. She first settled in Reno, Nevada in 1959 where she worked as a professional Black Jack dealer for 37 years. Moy moved to San Francisco and made the Tenderloin neighborhood her home at Maria Manor, a senior housing, for 27 years.
“It is with great sadness and a profound sense of gratitude and honor that I put forward this In Memoriam resolution to commemorate the passing of San Francisco housing advocate, Tenderloin icon, and my dear friend Connie Moy,” Haney said.

“She gave so much to all of us here in San Francisco, especially to those of us who live in the Tenderloin. The impact of her work will be felt for generations, and we will always remember Connie for her tireless advocacy, ferocious spirit, and generous and joyful smile," said Haney who always invited Moy to join him at his vehicle driving along the Lunar New Year parade route.
Moy co-founded the Tenderloin Chinese Rights Association with Siu Han Cheung in 2014 to advocate for the Chinese community in Tenderloin. The association's membership has grown to 300 in 10 years who are mostly the low income tenants and seniors living in the affordable housing facilities.
At the State Capitol's ceremony honoring Moy, Haney also distributed hand-wrapped gift bags carrying Mandarin oranges to a group of 20 seniors and leaders who were in attendance and wished them wealth and prosperity in honor of Lunar New Year and in Moy’s memory.
