SF announces increased security measures and traffic detours surrounding APEC leaders’ meeting at Moscone Center Nov. 14 -19
(SAN FRANCISCO) Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference will be held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco from November 14 to 19. The U.S. Secret Service and San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) announced that increased local security measures and traffic detours would be in place starting days prior to the summit meeting.
APEC is considered as one of the largest gatherings of global leaders in the history of San Francisco. In addition to the meetings at the Moscone Center, most APEC related activities will take place in the South of Market, the San Francisco waterfront area, and Nob Hill neighborhoods where a number of the hotels are located.
More than 20,000 people are expected to attend the historic APEC conference in San Francisco, including government officials from over 20 member economies in Asia, the Pacific, North America and South America.
The U.S. Secret Service and SFPD held a press conference on October 18 to announce the increased security measures and traffic controls during the APEC meetings.
“While an event of this size will undoubtedly impact the people of San Francisco, the goal of the Secret Service and our law enforcement and public safety partners is to provide a secure environment while minimizing impact and inconveniences to residents and businesses,” said Assistant Special Agent in Charge Jeremy Brown, the U.S. Secret Service’s APEC Summit Coordinator.
“The San Francisco Police Department is thrilled to welcome visitors from around the world for the APEC conference,” said San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott. “This will be an opportunity to showcase our beautiful city on a global scale. We are committed to ensuring the safety of everyone in our city during the event and we are using every resource available to protect our city."
For security reasons, areas around conference events will be closed to vehicle, transit, and bicycle through-traffic. People will be allowed into security zones to access their homes, work and shop with appropriate screening. Delays are expected throughout the week.
Parking restrictions will begin on Tuesday, Nov. 14, at 10 p.m., and extend through Saturday evening, Nov. 18.
According to Jeff Tumlin, Director of San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), there will be no service provided to 4th & Brannan, Yerba Buena-Moscone, and Rose Pak Chinatown Station of the Central Subway (T-Line) during the APEC Summit.
A Muni Metro shuttle train will operate every five minutes between Chinatown-Rose Pak Station and Union Square-Market Street Station to maintain access to Chinatown and areas north of downtown. Transfer at the Powell Street Station to Union Square-Market Street Station is available for the temporary shuttle.
A comprehensive updated traffic plan and map with street closures and parking restrictions can be found at www.sf.gov/APEC.
